Chapter Twenty-One

By the time we made it back to the vampire den, it was early morning. Tre had asked me again if I was okay with staying with the vampires for a few days until they found Edward, as if my opinion had some bearing on what the pack did or didn’t do. But when I’d looked around at everyone’s faces and saw them eagerly waiting to hear my opinion, I was shocked. I still couldn’t believe how kind Patty’s pack was. Part of me had thought that maybe they’d been putting on a show for me while Patty was missing, but after witnessing the ease with which they played and laughed and ran together, there was just no way they were faking it. It made me want to be a part of it. However, I wasn’t sure how good my chances were after what I’d done to Felix the other day, though everyone was being nice and no one had even said anything to me about it.

Everyone was sitting in the living room in various stages of dress. My belly was full from the deer and rabbits we’d caught while running. After spending the morning hunting and running with his pack, I was ready for some alone time with Patty. I didn’t even mean for sex—though that would be awesome, too—I just wanted to hold him and spend time with him, get to know him without so many others around us. But Patty sat on the couch when we walked in, so I followed him, sitting beside him. He seemed a little more at ease with me, so I put my arm over his shoulder, tucking him into my side. We’d both only put on sweatpants after our run, so I savored the feel of his skin against mine, our scents mixing together naturally. The aroma was intoxicating.

Patty grabbed the hand I had resting on my lap and laced our fingers together, then looked out and said to the group, “If we’re going to be here for a few days, do you think we should dry some meat? We may as well as take advantage of being in one place for once.”

Chris said, “One of the vampires let me use an empty room to hang meat this past week, so we actually have a good supply already, and I’m adding to it every day. He also gave me a couple tanks’ worth of gas, so we should be all set on that front when we’re ready to leave.”

Tre looked at Chris in confusion and asked, “Which vampire?”

“Dregan,” Chris said quietly.

Tre’s eyebrows rose into his hairline. “Seriously? Dregan is the one that’s been helping you? Even after everything I told you?”

“Uh, yes. Why? I told you he was a good guy.” Judging from his blush, Chris was a little embarrassed, though I had no clue why.
